‘I tell you today, that every ounce of gold taken from the bowels of our soil will yet have to be weighed up with rivers of tears.’
Thus, in 1885, did Paul Kruger, President of the Transvaal, welcome the discovery of major gold deposits on the borders of his newly-independent state.
In his second family history book, the author travels again to South Africa, this time to uncover facts about his mother’s early life. Born in the Transvaal, she lived her childhood through one of the most turbulent periods of South African history.
Like the previous volume, Patterns begins and ends in Scotland. It is the writer’s personal journey into the past, not simply to identify names in a family tree but to discover how his ancestors lived and what impact events of history may have made on their lives.
The book discusses social, industrial and political issues such as the railways, gold mining, the Scots language and Irish immigration, alongside the more personal detail.
Patterns is illustrated with official documents and photographs from the family album.
Patterns may be purchased as a hardback book at a price of £20.00 including postage and packing to a UK address.
