“The names we bear are a paradox. They may give us identity, but that very identity is an absurdity.”
Tapestry is the story of my father’s family from the beginning of the 18th Century until the middle of the 20th.
Surnames come to us from our fathers, and from our father’s fathers. However, by looking only for the origins of our names, we miss out on the rich tapestry of the many different families who have given us their genes. My search for these missing names has taken me from Lanarkshire to Edinburgh, London and South Africa and back again.
Tapestry is at once a family history and a social and political commentary on an age long gone. The book is illustrated with maps, documents and photos, some of them from the family album.
