The Il-khan’s Wife
The Story
TABRIZ, PERSIA, AD1290:
In Mongol Persia, two men are trying
to forge an alliance:
Giovanni, the papal envoy -
and Arghun, feared descendant of
Genghis Khan.
And one woman is torn between them - -
A mission for Pope Nicholas IV precipitates Venetian nobleman Giovanni di Montecervino into adventure and romance at the Mongol court.
Arghun, great-great-grandson of Genghis Khan, is dying. But some would hasten his death for political reasons, and others would sacrifice his wife Nadia for personal ones.
Nadia, beautiful and talented, victim of a barbaric Mongol marriage law, desires only to protect her son Hassan until he reaches manhood. Torn between her duty as a wife and a love that defies the hatred of the age, she must discover the identity of her secret enemy before it is too late.
And must Giovanni compromise his faith to save the Muslim woman he loves?

The Il-khan’s Wife
The History behind the Novel
The Il-khan’s Wife is set during the last few months of the life of Arghun Khan, the fourth Mongol ruler of Persia, and concerns his attempt to woo the West into an alliance against the Mamluk Sultan, Al-Ashraf.
The historical Arghun met his death in mysterious circumstances and the novel explores what might have happened.
Giovanni di Montecervino, the Italian hero of the story, is fictional. However, he was based on a real life character who, though he may not have shared my Giovanni’s exploits, was no less a hero in his way.
Although the character of Nadia is invented, I like to think of her as representative of women of her time and situation. Mongol society gave women a more prominent role than women of the Muslim nations they conquered, and wives of Mongol khans could be very powerful indeed.
“It was great to be taken away ... for a while each day and be whisked away to deserts and conflict and a great love story.”
